Maintaining a distance of three seconds from the vehicle in front of you is a widely accepted guideline that helps ensure safe driving under normal conditions. This three-second rule allows for adequate reaction time in case the vehicle ahead suddenly stops or slows down.

When the vehicle in front of you passes that object, you should be able to count three seconds before your vehicle reaches the same point. The other options do not offer practical or sufficient spacing for safe driving. For instance, maintaining just one car length may not allow enough time or space to react, especially at higher speeds. Driving a quarter mile behind another vehicle is excessive and unrealistic in most driving contexts, making it impractical for everyday driving situations.
